3 Ways To Write More

Do you struggle to find the time to write? It’s no wonder, with jobs, families and the demands of everyday life consuming your free time. If you’re a beginner, the difficulty is greater because others may not take your need for writing time seriously.

However, you can find the time you need with these three tips:

Put writing first.
Keeping your priorities straight is important. Take the time now to write a list of your most important tasks. Put them in order from most to least important, with writing as close to the top as possible. If you don’t put writing near the top of your list, you won’t write. How can you gain respect for your writing if you don’t write?

When you spend time each day at the keyboard or with your notebook, those around you will understand how important this is to you. Your dedication shows them. When they see you writing regularly, they will begin to accept your decision.

Train your muse.
Muses are troublesome to train. You can’t sit around waiting to be inspired. If you do, you won’t write very much at all. Instead, train your muse to show up by starting to write without inspiration. It will show up. If you don’t get started, a million other things will pull you and your writing dream will remain only a dream. The power to train your muse belongs to you.

Be consistent.
Set up a system for making progress toward your goals. Even writing can benefit from a well structured system. Spend some time figuring out when you are most productive. Schedule your writing during that time when possible. Maybe you have more energy in the morning and can write before work. Or you might prefer to burn the midnight oil. If so, stay up after everyone else is in bed and get to work.

Start by creating a ritual that signals your muse it is time to get moving toward those goals. The longer you stick to your schedule, honor your rituals, the more you will get done. And you will have the added benefit of gaining the respect of those closest to you for your dreams, because you are going after them.
